Director-General Revises Existing s98 Advisory

31 May 2013

On 24 September 2010, the Acting Director-General of Health, Andrew Bridgeman, issued a warning under s98 of the Medicines Act 1981 entitled “Medsafe recalls six products with undeclared prescription medicines”.

The undeclared prescription medicines found in the tested samples were sildenafil, tadalafil, thiosildenafil and hydroxyhomosildenafil. This warning was amended on 14 December 2012.

In response to further evidence provided in 2013, Medsafe is satisfied that the samples of “VigRx”, and “VigRX Plus” included in the initial s98 statement were concerned with counterfeit products. Kevin Woods, Director-General of Health, has amended the s98 advisory originally issued on 24 September 2010 and amended on 14 December 2012 to reflect this new information.

The revised advisory is available on the Medsafe website (including photographs of the counterfeit samples in question).

The revised advisory is also available on the Ministry of Health website.

VigRX and VigRX Plus are natural health products approved by Health Canada. Further information on VigRX and VigRX Plus can be obtained from the “Licensed natural health products database” on the Health Canada website (www.hc-sc.gc.ca). The distributor of VigRX and VigRX Plus has not sought Ministerial consent to sell these products in New Zealand and it is not currently for sale in this country.
